How to Water Plants Properly

Writer: Arona Road GreenhouseArona Road Greenhouse

Watering plants can be both an art and a science, but once you know the basics, your garden will thrive. Here's what you need to know to get it right.

  • Where to Water: Always aim for the base of the plant, directly at the soil. Wetting the leaves can encourage diseases like powdery mildew or fungal infections. For best results, use a watering can with a narrow spout or a soaker hose to get water exactly where it matters most.

  • When to Water: Timing is everything. Water early in the morning when the air is cool, and evaporation is minimal, ensuring the soil absorbs the moisture efficiently. Evening is a second-best option but avoid late watering as plants sitting in wet soil overnight can develop root rot.

  • How Much to Water: Most garden plants, such as annuals, perennials, and flowering shrubs, prefer consistent moisture around their roots—about one inch of water per week, including rainfall. Check the soil about an inch deep; if it feels dry, it’s time to water. Overwatering can be just as harmful as underwatering, so don't drown your plants!

  • What Not to Do: Avoid shallow sprinklings. They encourage weak root systems by only moistening the top layer of soil. Also, steer clear of watering during the hottest part of the day as most of it will simply evaporate, and water droplets on the leaves can act like tiny magnifying glasses, potentially scorching them.

The Positives of Proper Watering

When done correctly, watering not only nourishes plants but also promotes healthy root growth and improves the overall resilience of your garden. A well-watered plant is happier, sturdier, and more likely to produce vibrant blooms.

The Negatives of Improper Watering

On the flip side, overwatering can suffocate roots and lead to yellowing leaves, while underwatering stresses plants, making them weak and droopy. Both extremes make plants more vulnerable to pests and diseases.

Fun Fact: Did you know that inconsistent watering can cause some fruits and veggies like tomatoes to crack or split? Keeping moisture levels steady helps prevent this.

Mastering the art of watering will reward you with a lush, thriving garden. A little attention to detail goes a long way in keeping your plants healthy and beautiful!
