Hanging Baskets & Decorative Planters

Hanging Baskets & Decorative Planters: Designed to Thrive

Our hanging baskets and decorative planters are designed, planted, and grown right here in our greenhouses. From the very beginning, we thoughtfully choose plant combinations that grow well together—not just for color, but for habit, balance, and long-term performance.

Thoughtful Design, No Shortcuts

Every basket and planter starts with intention. We use only high-quality plants and carefully consider light, moisture needs, and growth patterns so each combination fills in beautifully over time. There are no shortcuts here—just experience, research, and a genuine love for what we do.

Grown, Tested, and Proven

We don’t just follow trends. Our team spends time researching new varieties, visiting trial gardens, and testing plants in our own spaces before they ever make it into a basket or planter. That hands-on approach helps ensure our designs look great and grow well in real gardens and homes.

Perfectly Timed, Always Full of Color

Our baskets and planters are grown to be ready at just the right moment—never rushed and never overgrown. They’re full, lush, and colorful when you take them home, with plenty of room left to continue growing and thriving throughout the season.

Sizes, Styles, and Something for Everyone

From smaller accent pieces to large statement baskets and planters, we grow a wide range of sizes and styles each season. Whether you’re dressing up a porch, patio, or garden space, you’ll find thoughtfully grown pieces that bring instant impact and lasting beauty.

SEASONAL BLOOMS

Caring for Annual Hanging Baskets

Caring for Annual Hanging Baskets

Hanging baskets bring instant color and impact, and with a little regular care, they’ll stay full and beautiful all season long. Because baskets are exposed to sun, wind, and air on all sides, they need a bit more attention than plants in the ground — but the payoff is worth it.

Watering

Consistent watering is the most important part of keeping hanging baskets healthy. Because baskets dry out quickly, they often need water daily during warm weather and sometimes twice a day during hot, dry stretches.

A good rule of thumb is to water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Water thoroughly until it flows out the bottom of the basket — good drainage is essential to keep roots healthy. Avoid letting baskets dry out completely, as stressed plants won’t perform as well.

Feeding

Hanging baskets rely on regular feeding to support continuous growth and blooms. Frequent watering can wash nutrients out of the soil, so replenishing them is key.

We recommend using a slow-release fertilizer designed for containers and hanging baskets. These fertilizers gradually feed plants over time, helping maintain strong growth and steady color throughout the season. Supplemental liquid feeding can also be helpful during peak summer growth.

Removing Spent Flowers

Removing faded or dead flowers encourages plants to keep blooming. When old flowers are left in place, plants shift their energy into seed production instead of new growth. A quick trim or pinch every so often helps keep baskets looking fresh and full.

Pests & Plant Health

Occasional pests or diseases can happen, especially during warm, humid weather. A well-watered, well-fed basket is less likely to have issues. If you notice something unusual — leaf damage, discoloration, or insects — bring in a small sample, and our team will be happy to help identify the issue and recommend a solution.

DO-IT-YOURSELF

How to Create an Annual Hanging Basket

Creating your own hanging basket is a fun way to personalize your space and enjoy color all season long. A little planning at the start makes all the difference.

Start with Sun or Shade

Before choosing plants, decide where your basket will hang. Most baskets fall into one of two categories, sun or shade, and choosing plants that match the light conditions is key to success.

Great Plants for Sunny Baskets
Sun-loving baskets thrive in bright light and warm conditions.

Our favorites include:

  • Petunias

  • Calibrachoa

  • Verbena

  • Bidens

  • Geraniums

  • Angelonia

  • Vinca

  • Lofos

  • Euphorbia

  • Lobularia

  • Scaevola

Great Plants for Shady Baskets
Shaded baskets shine with texture and color when planted with the right varieties:

  • Impatiens

  • Fuchsia

  • Begonias

  • Coleus

  • Torenia

  • Tradescantia

  • Creeping Jenny

  • Asparagus Fern

  • Lysimachia

Don’t be afraid to experiment. Some of the most beautiful baskets come from mixing textures, colors, and growth habits in unexpected ways.

Choosing Soil & Fertilizer

Good soil is the foundation of a successful basket. Use a lightweight, well-draining potting mix designed for containers or hanging baskets. These mixes allow roots to breathe while holding enough moisture to keep plants happy.

We also recommend mixing a slow-release fertilizer into the soil at planting time. This provides steady nutrition throughout the season and helps keep baskets full, healthy, and colorful without constant feeding.

Planting Your Basket

Once your plants and soil are ready, it’s time to plant.

  • Fill the basket with soil, leaving room for roots.

  • Place upright or fuller plants toward the center for structure.

  • Arrange trailing plants around the edges so they can spill over as they grow.

For baskets with side openings or moss-lined baskets, trailing plants can also be tucked into the sides for extra fullness. Most baskets look best when planted generously—fuller plantings create quicker impact and better coverage.

After planting, water thoroughly until moisture runs out the bottom of the basket. This helps settle soil around the roots and gives plants a strong start.

Helpful Tip from Our Growers

A newly planted basket may look slightly spaced at first—that’s intentional. Giving plants room to grow allows them to fill in naturally and perform better as the season progresses.
